Department Overview: Walker Downey and Associates, Inc. (WDA, http://www.walkerdowney.com) is a virtual, 3-person medical device toxicology and biocompatibility consulting company consisting of a President/Toxicologist (lead scientist), CEO (contact person), and Director of Operations (full-time consultant, manages day-to-day operations), supported by an annual cohort of undergraduate UW-Madison student interns. Anticipated Start Date 6/1/26 Anticipated End Date 6/1/29 Anticipated Hours Per Week 20 Schedule: Open/flexible. This is an independent contractor (1099) postion. 10-20 hrs/week; will exceed 20 hrs/week during large projects. Salary/Wage Range: Hourly $30.00 to $30.00 Number Of Positions 3 Position Summary/Job Duties: Walker Downey and Associates, Inc. (WDA, http://www.walkerdowney.com) is a virtual, 3-person medical device toxicology and biocompatibility consulting company consisting of a President/Toxicologist (lead scientist), CEO (contact person), and Director of Operations (full-time consultant, manages day-to-day operations), supported by an annual cohort of undergraduate UW-Madison student interns. WDA has openings for 3 students to fill the positions soon to be vacated by other interns as they pursue professional school or fulltime industry employment. You will learn how to assess the safety of chemicals that may leach from medical devices using online sources and in silico programs. You will summarize these data using our templates. You will be paid as a consultant/1099 independent contractor ($30/hour) while working virtually and setting your own times. You will work 1:1 with our Director of Operations. All work is remote/virtual and all product/reports prepared by you will be templated for editing and critique. Understanding health/safety is important, so training in biology/chemistry is useful. Interns are typically majoring in biology, chemistry, engineering, biomedical engineering, premed, prelaw, psychology, but there is no requirement. An ideal intern is highly proficient in online research, including peer reviewed and academic sources, and has strong data analysis and scientific writing skills. This individual can produce clear, persuasive, and well-structured technical discussions. Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, especially formatting and template development, is required. The intern is self-motivated, highly detail-oriented, and able to work independently with minimal errors/correction. Qualifications: * Undergraduate UW-Madison student, preferably an incoming (Fall 2026) sophomore or junior * Preferred STEM major * Access to and advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) * Be able to attend virtual training/onboarding via Teams or Zoom * Prepare chemical risk assessments using publicly available online literature and company templates * Work independently with minimal errors/correction Physical Demands None Application Instructions: Contact Beth McLain (VP) via email (eamclain@charter.net), stating interest and resume.
